Lector Preparation

  1. It is important that during the week prior to your scheduled reading, you read, pray and reflect upon the Scriptures for that day. This will not only allow you to feel comfortable when doing the readings, but also allow you to emphasize particular words and phrases. In getting a sense of what the Scriptures are about, you will be able to proclaim the Scripture as God’s Word.

  2. If you have difficulty with the pronunciation of words, most Bibles have dictionaries to help with this. The Lector’s Workbook also gives helps with pronunciations. You can also check with the priest prior to Mass.

  3. It is necessary that you arrive 10—15 minutes before Mass. This will give you the opportunity to check the reading in the Lectionary, as well as review the prayers of the faithful, being certain to check with the priest for correct pronunciation of names. Arriving early also insures that the priest does not have a panic attack.

  4. After both lectors have checked the readings, one lector puts the Lectionary on the ambo, open to the first reading of the day. The name that appears first on the Ministers’ list (under Lector) is Lector #1; the second name is Lector #2. This is the usual arrangement, but can be changed if agreeable to both lectors.
