Please be present a least 10 minutes before Mass begins. If you can't be there, find a substitute ahead of time.
A list of all ministers (Lectors, Eucharistic, Servers and Users) for each mass is in a 3 ring binder in the Sacristy. Put a mark next to your name on the list posted in the ministers book so that the head Eucharistic minister will know who is present.
The Head Eucharistic Minister is always the person whose name first appears on the ministry list.
At the sign of peace, all scheduled ministers are to join the priest at the foot of the altar.
When the priest has received the Body and Blood of Christ, the ministeres walk around the altar to behind the altar. He will give communion to each of the Eucharistic ministers. (Note: Altar servers will receive communion after the Eucharistic ministers have received and the ciboria and chalices have been distributed.)
All ministers will follow the priest down to the bottom of the steps and spread out evenly as far as possible to avoid any congestion during communion. All the eucharistic ministers should be aware of any person who cannot walk up the aisle to receive communion. In such an event, one minister of the bread as well as one minister of the chalice are to go to the pew of the individual(s).
See chart for
places to stand when distributing Holy Communion.
When giving the Host, be sure to hold the Host up in full view of the communicant, making eye contact as you say, Body of Christ. The Communicant should say, Amen. Take your time. This is to be a reverent and joyful experience.
The minister of the cup needs to establish eye contact with the communicant as they say, Blood of Christ. Release the cup completely into the commnicants hands. You may need to assist a child or elderly person. The minister then must wipe the rim of the cup, slightly turning the cup before giving it to the next communicant.
As soon as you chalice is empty, go to the back sacristy. Consume any wine that is remaining in the chalice. Add a small amount of water and consume again. Rinse the chalice and pour into the sink with the lid. The drain in the sacrarium goes into the ground, not the sewer system. Never pour the wine down the sink. If you are unable to consume all the remaining wine ask another minister to help you.
After everyone has received communion, the ministers of the chalice are to go to the sacristy to purify the chalices. The ministers with the ciborium return the ciboria to the altar and then go to the Tabernacle to wash their fingers. Afterwards, they go to the back sacristy to help with the purification of the chalices.
The head Eucharistic minister, if there is no deacon, receives the ciborium from the priest and goes to the Tabernacle to put away any extra consecrated hosts. After this, the head minister goes to the sacristy to help with the purifications.
All eucharistic ministers are to leave the sacristy at the same time after all the vessels have been purified. All ministers go to the front of the altar, bow, and return to their seats.
After Mass, the head eucharistic minister is responsible for setting the chalices up for the next Mass (including purificators), or putting chalices away if the last Mass, as well as purifying the wine decanter and the ciboria that were used for the Mass. If it was not the last Mass, the wine decanter (after purification) needs to be filled for the next Mass.
Although the head eucharistic minister is responsible for these things, other eucharistic ministers should help with the post-Mass duties.
Please do not sit in the back of the church if you are scheduled to be an eucharistic minister. This will prevent any needless delays while the Lamb of God is being sung.
While in the sacristy purifying the vessels, please be as quiet as possible.
Serving as an Eucharistic Minister is a very important ministry and one that should be taken seriously. If you find that you cannot serve in this capacity on the date your are scheduled, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. If you know in advance that you will be out to town for a long period of time, inform the church office of the dates so that you will not be scheduled during that time.
