Renew Season V is just around the corner. Plan to continue - or to begin - your RENEW journey in September. The focus for the 6 week small group gatherings is "Renewing for the 21st Century" which is based on Catholic Social Teachings. Sign up weekends, September 11/12 and 18/19. Everyone needs a spot in a small community of faith - and there is a spot for everyone.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Friends in Christ,

The annual appeal to support the good work of Catholic Charities takes place in all the parishes of our Archdiocese next weekend, September 18-19. The 2004 Appeal Goal is $1.7 million, which represents about one-half of the annual total operations budget of Catholic Charities. Your support makes possible a diverse range of services directed to children, families, and adults who are in great need. Catholic Charities direct services are provided through their offices in OKC, Lawton, Enid, and Clinton. These direct services include family counseling, family support services, refugee resettlement, and immigration assistance. The appeal also supports outreach efforts to assist and develop social ministries in all parishes in the Archdiocese of OKC, such as our Laughlin House for a homeless family. Staff from Parish Social Ministries at Catholic Charities will soon visit our parish to develop a Social Ministries Board. There are a multitude of ways Catholic Charities serves Christ in the least of our sisters and brothers. This appeal is not a special 2nd collection, but a commitment on our part to make an annual sacrificial gift to support Catholic Charities. (In addition, you can support the work of Catholic Charities by earmarking your United Way donations to benefit Catholic Charities directly.) Last year our parish had 278 donors give $96,296. (In 2002, we had 283 donors give $73,401 and in 2001 we had 147 donors give $55,249.) With your help, our parish can surpass the 300 donor/$100,000 mark in this year’s appeal. Thanks to all who have generously supported Catholic Charities.

As I mentioned in last week’s column, through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the bishops of Florida have requested a national collection to provide assistance to their people in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. This assistance is even more needed after the destruction done by Hurricane Frances and with the possibility that Hurricane Ivan might strike Florida as well. Archbishop Beltran is asking that all parishes in our Archdiocese take up a special collection as a disaster relief response. We will take up this special collection this weekend. Your gift will help the local churches in Florida assist those affected by this disaster to rebuild their lives.

The people of Sudan are also suffering greatly. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of villages have been destroyed in the violence that has engulfed the Darfur region of western Sudan for more than a year. More than a million people have been forced from their homes by a methodical campaign of bombing, burning, and rape. Almost 200,000 refugees and their livestock are overwhelming camps across the border in Chad. Many people are expected to die of starvation and disease. Catholic Relief Services and other humanitarian organizations are trying to bring supplies and hope to those who are suffering. Please keep the people of Darfur and those assisting them in your prayers.

In keeping with the theme of reaching out to those people in great need, the donation baskets for our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference have been replaced by a donation box at the north end of the church next to the main entrance.

In the peace of Christ,

Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

PROJECT GABRIEL is a parish based pro-life outreach to women who find themselves in crisis when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. This grass roots hands-on approach to helping women choose life for their unborn children has been highly successful in parishes throughout the United States. Parishes that support Project Gabriel are responding in a special way to the Gospel of Life. Many women who have had abortions say that if only one person would have reached out to them with encouragement, they would have chosen life for their babies. Help comes in the form of a Gabriel Angel Volunteer who supports the mother's choice for life through prayer, ongoing friendship and encouragement, and referrals to church and community resources. To register or to find out more, call the Office of Family Life, 721-5651, ext. 107 or 721-8944 or email, okcgabriel@yahoo.com.

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells the story about the Prodigal Son. Just as the father welcomed his lost son back into his home, our Father in Heaven rejoices when we repent our sins and ask for forgiveness. Jesus asks for us to be loving and generous to others.
