Dear Friends in Christ,

Through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the bishops of Florida have requested a national collection to provide assistance to their people in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. In response to this request, Archbishop Beltran is asking that all parishes in our Archdiocese take up a special collection as a disaster relief response. We will take up this special collection next weekend, September 11,-12th, at all Masses. Your gift will help the local churches in Florida assist those affected by this disaster to rebuild their lives. Pray for those who lost their lives in this disaster or who mourn the death of their loved ones.

Next weekend is also the time when we pray for all our catechists and ask God’s special blessing upon them as they embrace the important ministry of passing on the Faith. We are grateful to all our catechists who teach our children, teens, and adults.

After the 5 p.m. Mass next Saturday, Sept. 11th, there will be a reception to welcome all newcomers to our parish. A simple meal will be provided and parish leaders will be present to talk about the many different ministries in our parish. If you are new to our parish and have not attended one of these newcomer receptions, please come.

Next Sunday evening, September 12th, we start up again with our weekly Life-Teen Mass at 5:30 p.m. All are invited to attend this Mass. Most especially our teens are invited to come because the music is more to their style and the homily is addressed to them in a special way. Life-Night follows every Life-Teen Mass, which is a time for the teens to come together for food, fun, and to learn more about their Faith.

Next Sunday is also when our parish celebrates its annual festival: Festival of the Americas-International. If you have not had the opportunity to attend this festival in the past, you will want to drop by the parish hall/gym between 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. for an incredible variety of cuisine and entertainment. There will also be fun and games for the kids. This festival is a wonderful opportunity for those who are not members of our parish to walk through our doors and encounter the hospitality of our people, so invite your friends and neighbors to attend as well.

This Labor Day weekend members of our youth group joined youth from St. Monica Parish in Edmond and Sacred Heart Parish in south OKC to do a "Labor of Love." These youth, along with adult leaders, worked on homes in Sacred Heart Parish that needed painting or repair, prayed together, and played together.

In the peace of Christ,

Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

In today's Gospel, Luke 14:25-33, Jesus addresses the crowd about preparation and choosing to walk with Him. "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple." He asks the people how can they construct a tower without calculating the cost first, or going into battle without knowing its opposition. Jesus says, "In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions, cannot be my disciple."

Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City needs your help in serving others. On September 18-19, the 2004 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal will begin. You will hear personal stories of how Catholic Charities has lifted up the human spirit. You will be asked for your support. Please remember that your contribution, no matter how great or small, brightens the path of others, as well as our own.

A box for donations to serve the poor through St. Vincent de Paul is located in the rear of the church, above the gift table. If you do not use the regular St. Vincent de Paul envelope, please place your donations in the designated box.
