Dear Friends in the Christ,

Over 5,000 Catholics attended the Confirmation celebration this past Sunday at the Cox Cable Center. Twelve bishops and abbots were present to help Archbishop Beltran celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, and many priests, religious and deacons were present as well. Parents and sponsors, DRE’s and catechists came from every corner of the Archdiocese. (Our DRE, Karen Bernardy, with the help of our 2nd Year Confirmation Catechists, Jane Solomon and Susan Mbau, did a fine job in preparing our candidates for Confirmation.) The choir and musicians from parishes throughout the Archdiocese led all gathered in a wide variety of beautiful music. (Our Director of Music, Brent McWilliams, and some choir members from our parish were part of the choir.) The celebration of the Mass on such a grand scale with so many people lifting their voices and hearts in praise of God was just another reminder to me of what a blessing it is to be part of the Catholic Church. Though the members of our Church have suffered over the past several years because of the scandal of child abuse by clergy, the faith of our people continues to remain vibrant and strong.

The vibrancy of faith was reflected in a special way in the nearly 900 teenagers being Confirmed. They are not only our hope for the future of the Church---these young people are the Church today. I was especially moved by the testimony given by two young women---one who had just been Confirmed and another who had just graduated from college. These two young ladies spoke about the blessings of their Archdiocesan Summer Camp experiences, both as campers and as camp counselors. They shared how spending time at the summer camp at Lake Murray, which later moved to its present location at Our Lady of Guadalupe Camp (Camp OLOG) near Wellston, helped strengthen their faith. Archbishop Beltran spoke about how 1000 youth attend summer camp at OLOG last summer and that another 4,000 youth visited OLOG during the rest of the year for retreats and workshops. (This past school year our 7th Graders went on two different retreats at OLOG.) The testimony given by these two young women of faith preceded the collection for the Mass which was taken up to help pay for the construction of a new Activity Center at Camp OLOG.

Last Saturday I went to see an amazing exhibition called "Unveiling Ancient Mystery: Etruscan Treasures" at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art on the campus of St. Gregory University. This is the only venue in the U.S. to host this exhibition of over 200 pieces of Etruscan gold jewelry and 35 pieces of Etruscan bronze and terracotta artifacts. These priceless artifacts will be on display until October 31, 2004, and are worth making the trip to Shawnee.

After 90 days of seasonal liturgies for Lent and Easter, Ordinary Time resumed last Monday. Ordinary Time means something ordered, for the coming weeks of the liturgical year are numbered, with the Lord’s Day, Sunday, as the high point of each week. Today, the 10th Sunday of Ordinary Time, is the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi
