Dear Friends in the Christ,
"When the days for his being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem"
(Lk. 9:51). With this opening verse from today’s Gospel, we enter a new section of Luke’s Gospel, the journey to Jerusalem. The phrase "days for his being taken up" most likely refers to all that will take place in Jesus’ last days in Jerusalem (suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension). The phrase "he resolutely determined" literally means, "he set his face." From this point onward, the Lucan Jesus marches on toward the city of his destiny, Jerusalem, where his exodus (suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension) will take place, salvation will be accomplished, and the proclamation of the saving word of God will go forth. Much of the material in the Lucan travel narrative is teaching for his disciples, for during this journey Jesus prepares them to be his faithful witnesses. On the Sundays from now until the end of October, with the exception of one Sunday (August 15th, which is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary), we will hear from this journey narrative in Luke’s Gospel. Included will be parables that are found only in Luke: the Good Samaritan, the Rich Fool, the Prodigal Son, the Dishonest Steward, the Rich Man and Lazarus, the Persistent Widow, the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. From this treasury of teaching on discipleship, we will discover anew what it means to follow Jesus up to Jerusalem, passing with him from death to new life.Vacation Bible School (VBS) is right around the corner (July 6-9). VBS is a fun way for children to learn more about the sacred stories and faith-filled figures that fill the pages of Sacred Scripture.
There have been several parishioners asking me what the construction at the front of the parish facilities is all about. I know I have explained this already in this column and in the Gospel Truth, but I do not mind sharing the information again so that more people will be better informed. Emergency exits for the Pre-Kindergarten (3 and 4 yr. old) and Kindergarten classrooms are being installed by order of the state fire marshal.
Also, I continue to receive queries about the special 2nd collection taken up on the first Sunday of the month. This is for the School Scholarship Endowment Fund, which is being built up until the interest from this fund can be used to provide tuition assistance for families whose children attend our parish school. Presently the interest on this endowment fund is being reinvested in the fund. The Catholic High School Scholarship Fund has just recently been started in our parish, and this fund provides scholarships to 8th grade students who will attend either of the two Catholic High Schools in the OKC area (McGuinness or Mt. St. Mary). These scholarships are based upon academic achievement, financial need, and service to the parish and school. If the scholarship recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA and remains active in our parish, the scholarship can be renewed for each year of high school.
After 10 years as our parish organist, Leon Sanderson is resigning as of the end of this month. Thus, this Sunday will be his last official Sunday playing the organ. Be sure to thank Leon for sharing his musical gifts and himself with us, and pray for him as he begins this new stage in his life. In the peace of Christ,
Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi
