The flowers for the sanctuary during June were provided in part through the generous gifts received from Charles Smith in remembrance of Billie M. Smith, Ann and Julian Codding, in memory of their fathers and Nguyet Pham, in memory of her father and mother.

Parishioners who would like to remember a loved one or celebrate a special day, may make a donation to the Flower Remembrance Fund by contacting the parish office. Donations of $50 or more will be recognized in the church bulletin during the month selected.

Dear Friends in the Christ,

Happy Father’s Day! Today we give thanks for those whom we call "father" and ask God’s blessing upon them in a special way. Speaking of fathers, Fr. Ross has returned from some time away. He will have the 5 p.m. Mass this weekend and next, as I have a wedding at St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral this Saturday evening (June 19) and then will travel to Bison next Saturday to do a wedding for a priest friend who is recovering from surgery.

By the way, the parish collection for Fr. Bill Ross totaled $5,187.00. As for the collection for our new priest, Fr. Rex Arnold, that stands at $3,316.00, about $179.00 short of our goal. Fr. Arnold is very excited about our parish giving him a trip on our parish-sponsored pilgrimages/image to Italy. Thanks for your generosity to these two "fathers," and for the many ways you bless my life as well.

Work continues on the emergency exits for our Pre-K and Kindergarten rooms. The doors should be arriving soon. Thanks to the PTO for their donation of $5000 to help pay for this renovation. Thanks to Becky Schwarz, the outgoing president of PTO, who has given many hours in this leadership position and congratulations to the new PTO president, Cindy Nigg.

Both the roof on the parish rectory and the roof on the Laughlin House (our parish home for a homeless family) were totaled by a May hailstorm and will be replaced soon. Rob Fraser, who has been a Scout Leader for the past 8 years, has been mowing the lawn at the Laughlin House. Rob has been assisted at times in his work at keeping the Laughlin House grounds looking nice by some of the Scouts. Thanks to Rob and the Scouts for their help.

Sr. Carmen Vasquez and Sr. Adela Lopez, the two Carmelite Sisters who coordinate our Hispanic Ministry, left this past week for their annual summer retreats, chapter meetings, and vacation time. They will return on August 8th. Since the Hispanic Sisters started working here about 7 years ago, the Archdiocese has paid their salary and benefits, while our parish has provided a car and room and board. Beginning with this new fiscal year (July 1), the Archdiocese will require our parish to pay for the Sisters’ benefits (insurance, retirement, etc.) and most likely within a year or two our parish will pay their salary as well. Sr. Carmen and Sr. Adela assist the many people who drop in to see them, and coordinate the sacramental preparation programs, hospital and homebound visitation, adult education programs, and other activities for our Spanish-speaking parishioners. Our Hispanic Youth Group, under the direction of Victor Garcia, has been very active, and in May went on a weekend retreat (2nd Annual) with Hispanic youth from other parishes. One of the statistics that still sticks in my mind from a recent National Priests’ Convention is that 48% of Catholics under age 30 in the U.S. are Hispanic. Not only do we have many Hispanic youth in our parish, but many infants as well. Last Sunday I baptized 8 babies at the monthly Spanish baptismal celebration, which is about the monthly norm.

The annual Peter’s Pence Collection in support of the works of the Holy Father will be next weekend, June 26-27. Use your Peter’s Pence envelope and place it in with the regular collection. In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi

"Who do you say that I am?"

Jesus asks Peter in today's Gospel.

Does my use of the gifts and talents entrusted to me

accurately reflect my answer to that same question?

How willing am I to deny myself,

take up my cross,

and follow in His steps?
