Dear Friends in Christ,
The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as St. Athanasius noted, as one "great Sunday." For fifty days we are to dwell more deeply in the paschal mystery, surrendering with joyful faith and love as the Spirit of the Risen Lord more fully takes possession of our lives. We have a hard time comprehending such a prolonged celebration because, as Nathan Mitchell points out, "we tend to link feasts and holidays with mindless hoopla." Mitchell states, "’Party time,’ for many, is an invitation to obliterate consciousness, to get wasted, to veg out, to forget. But a season of Christian festival is precisely the opposite. It is a time of intensified consciousness, finely tuned awareness, awakened memory. The great fifty days of Pentecost are not an unwelcome, unrealistic, obligation to ‘party on,’ even if we don’t feel like it, but an invitation to explore more deeply ‘the weather of the heart,’ to awaken our memory of God’s presence and power in our lives…."
On behalf of our parish, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our visitors. We are glad you have joined us today for this great celebration of the Lord’s victory over death. If you are a newcomer to our parish, please come to a reception in your honor this Saturday evening, April 17th, after the 5 p.m. Mass in the meeting rooms. A simple yet delicious meal will be served beginning at 6:15 p.m. and parish leaders will be present to talk about the many ministries of our parish. Childcare will be provided. Please call the parish office at 751-7115 to RSVP for this event.
Our Planning Committee has been meeting since the end of January and working diligently at putting together a 5-year plan for our parish. The committee has reviewed previous plans and studies and begun the analysis of where our parish stands today and where we are headed. Thus, this committee is compiling a "SWOT" (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis of our parish with the help of feedback from parish leaders. On Wednesday evening, April 28th, the Planning Committee will host a workshop for all leaders of parish ministries and members of major parish boards/committees to talk about major goals and priorities concerning our program (spiritual and ministerial) needs and physical facilities needs.
Presently a pressing need is for a dedicated nursery space. At the weekend Masses one of the Pre-K classrooms is used as a nursery while during the week the cry room is used. However, neither space (especially the cry room) is adequate. A sub-committee composed of parish staff members is looking at options for a better location for the nursery. Certainly our 5-year plan should include a dedicated space for a nursery, but in the meantime, I appreciate the patience of our families with young children. Also, our five early childhood classrooms that are used for the 3-year old, 4-year old, and kindergarten students in our parish school need to renovated in order to be in line with the fire code. Thus, an exit door leading outdoors will be added to each of these rooms during the month of June.
In the peace of Christ,
Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi
