JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF THE VIRGIN MARY

Joseph, honored on March 19 since the end of the 10thc; declared Patron of the Universal Church in 1870 by Pope Pius IX; declared Guardian of the Redeemer in 1989 by Pope John Paul II; patron of workers and carpenters; also of Austria, Belgium, Bohemia, Canada, Mexico, Peru and South Vietnam; mentioned in the Roman Canon.

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Friends of Bolivia dinner and auction was a big success, raising around $12,000 to help finance this year’s medical mission trip to Bolivia. So many people came for the delicious dinner and to bid on auction items that the gym was overflowing and tables had to be set up in the hallway. Thanks to Steve Chastain and the Knights of Columbus and all who helped with this event.

This weekend at the 10 a.m. Sunday Mass you will notice a familiar face. Fr. Frank Wrigley will be presiding at this Mass. Fr. Wrigley lived in residence for quite a few years at our parish and was a great help to Fr. Pruett during his pastorate here. Fr. Wrigley is enjoying his retirement and presently lives at the Catholic Pastoral Center in northwest Oklahoma City. Also, thanks to Fr. Joe Ross of Christ the King, who has been coming once a month to celebrate the 6:30 p.m. Life-Teen Mass on Sunday evening. As I’ve mentioned before, though the music and homily are directed more towards teenagers, the Life-Teen Mass Is open to anyone to attend.

This Wednesday, March 17th, is not only a high holy day in the Irish Calendar (St. Patrick’s Day). It is also the first anniversary of the death of Archbishop Charles Salatka. Archbishop Salatka led our Arcdhiocese for about 15 years and was the bishop who ordained me to the priesthood. Please pray for his eternal rest.

Several of our high school youth had important roles in last week’s musical production, "Bye-Bye Birdie," at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. Congratulations to Keisha Jackson who did a great job with the lead role. Kristina Abernathy also played a fun part in the musical, and her sister, Meagan, was assistant stage manager. Diana Kwiatkowski played the piano in the orchestra.

Please keep in your prayers our elect who have been chosen for the Easter Sacraments and who will become one with us in our faith at that time. Pray for those catechumens who will be baptized: Shane Dawson, Fiamma Felitch, Sueko Garcia, Bruce Jordan, Sherman Lockard, Lisette Quinones, Victor Quinones, and Jessica Zinken. Pray for those candidates who are already baptized who will be completing their Christian initiation: Valerie Cones, Terry Crocker, Daniel DeLara, Susan DeWeese, Sandy Felitch, Tommie Hancock, Sue Hodges, Jeffrey Mlekush, Emmy Roush, Vera Koon Sirleaf, Jason Tannehill, and April Watts.

In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi>

OUR LENTEN REGULATIONS

Church law considers every Friday and the season of Lent as penitential time. The practice of penance is part of our faith and Christian life. When we do penance, we imitate Jesus Who Himself recommended it as necessary to His followers and gave them the example of His prayer and fasting.

The Lenten obligation, as determined for Catholics in the United States by our bishops, requires that fasting be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The law of abstinence from meat is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Who must fast? All Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59. The obligation ceases when one begins his/her 60th year.

Who must abstain? All Catholics who are 14 years and older.

What does fasting mean? The observance of fasting means that those obliged my take only one full meal on the day of fast. Two lighter meals (not equal to another full meal) are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

What does abstinence mean? The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat. Voluntary abstinence refers to refraining from lawful pleasures in a spirit of penance.

Can anyone be dispensed or excused from fast and/or abstinence? Individuals with just cause may be dispensed by a priest. Those who are ill or have a similar serious reason are excused from the observance of fast and abstinence. Catholics are reminded that they should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. If they do so, they then need to compensate with prayer and other voluntary penance.

The Altar Society is seeking nominations for the "2004 St. Eugene Woman of Achievement". To nominate, submit the name of the parishioner who impresses you as a woman of prayer and service in the parish and in the greater community, write a letter explaining why you think she is deserving of the honor. To learn the names of the previous honorees or for further information, call Marcy Tolentino, 751-5175 or Mary Ann Tomlinson, 216-8958.

Parishioners are encouraged to reach out and invite a non-Catholic friend or family member to attend. March 25, 7:00 p.m., Meeting Room 2, topic: "What Is the Meaning of the Mass?" Call Judi, 751-7115, ext. 115, to receive a handout for discussion prior to the gathering date.
