Dear Friends in Christ,
This Sunday at the 10 a.m. Mass we will celebrate the Rite of Sending for those catechumens and candidates in RCIA who have been chosen for the Easter Sacraments. They will sign their names in the "Book of the Elect" and be sent to the Cathedral for a 7 p.m. Rite of Election celebration with Archbishop Beltran. There will be three different celebrations of the Rite of Election at the Cathedral this Sunday, and each time the Cathedral will be packed with catechumens and candidates and their sponsors. It is indeed a sign of the vitality of the Catholic Church in Oklahoma that so many people each year join the Church. Please pray for our elect as they enter this important stage of purification and preparation for the Easter Sacraments.
This Saturday night, March 6th, is our annual "Friends of Bolivia Spaghetti Dinner". This is the main fundraiser for our annual Medical Mission to Bolivia, and includes a silent and live auction. Come out and support this important parish outreach.
At all the Masses next weekend I will give a brief talk on our present financial status. Our parish accountant, with the help of our Finance Committee, has prepared a financial report with explanatory notes. This report will cover our actual income and expenses for the first 6 months of the fiscal year (July 1 – December 31, 2003) and the budget projection for the final 6 months of this fiscal year. Though our income has exceeded our present expenses, the expense of maintaining our facilities continues to take bites out of our income. Just this past week I signed three separate checks totaling $1500 for electrical repair, plumbing repair, and replacement of one of our floor to ceiling glass windows. Our present parish accountant is Wanda Buckner, and she has been working at our parish since November 2003. She had previously worked for 7 years for Fleming Companies as a manager in financial analysis. Wanda had also held positions of senior vice president, chief financial officer, controller, and internal auditor.
Several people have asked me if they can come to our Life-Teen Mass on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. Our high school youth serve in the various ministries at this Mass (greeters, ushers, lectors, eucharistic ministers) and the music and homily are directed toward them, but the Mass is always open for anyone to attend. Presently we are having this Mass in the chapel, just to the left (east) of the main church entrance.
As usual, the Stations of the Cross will be on Friday evenings in Lent. Parish groups will host a Lenten Meal from 6:00 p .m. – 7:30 p.m. and the Stations will be prayed in English at 6:30 p.m. and in Spanish at 7:30 p.m. Walking the way of the cross is a powerful way to prepare for the Paschal Triduum and the annual celebration of the Lord’s saving death and resurrection.
The father of Brent McWilliams, our music director, died on February 19th. Please keep Brent’s father, Thomas, in your prayers, as well as Brent and the rest of his family.
In the peace of Christ,
Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi

OUR LENTEN REGULATIONS
Church law considers every Friday and the season of Lent as penitential time. The practice of penance is part of our faith and Christian life. When we do penance, we imitate Jesus Who Himself recommended it as necessary to His followers and gave them the example of His prayer and fasting.
The Lenten obligation, as determined for Catholics in the United States by our bishops, requires that fasting be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The law of abstinence from meat is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Who must fast? All Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59. The obligation ceases when one begins his/her 60th year.
Who must abstain? All Catholics who are 14 years and older.
What does fasting mean? The observance of fasting means that those obliged my take only one full meal on the day of fast. Two lighter meals (not equal to another full meal) are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
What does abstinence mean? The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat. Voluntary abstinence refers to refraining from lawful pleasures in a spirit of penance.
Can anyone be dispensed or excused from fast and/or abstinence? Individuals with just cause may be dispensed by a priest. Those who are ill or have a similar serious reason are excused from the observance of fast and abstinence. Catholics are reminded that they should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. If they do so, they then need to compensate with prayer and other voluntary penance.

LENTEN PARISH MISSION 2004
This year's Lenten Parish Mission will be held on the evenings of March 7-9 and will be led by Fr. Thomas Boyer. The title of our Lenten Mission is "Pilgrimage to Jerusalem: Luke as the Guide." Fr. Boyer will base his talks upon the inspiring instructions Jesus gives on discipleship in Luke's Gospel during Jesus' journey up to Jerusalem. Since this is the "Year of Luke" with the Gospel of Luke being proclaimed almost every Sunday, our Lenten Mission will provide a solid basis for understanding Luke's presentation of Jesus' saving mission. Our Lenten Mission will begin on Sunday, March 7, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the church, and will continue on Monday and Tuesday nights (March 8 and 9) from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Childcare will be provided.
Each evening of the Mission will involve preaching, prayer and music, and will be a golden opportunity for those who attend to deepen their understanding of what following Jesus really means. Fr. Boyer is presently the pastor of St. Mark the evangelist Church in Norman. Formerly, Fr. Boyer was the rector of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City for 15 years. He also has served as Archdiocesan Director of Vocations and Archdiocesan Director of Youth Ministry. This year marks Fr. Boyer's 36th year of service as a priest. He is a much sought after retreat speaker, having given retreats for priests in dioceses all across the country.
