Each of us has his or her own role to play in the coming of the Kingdom of God. John the Baptist was called to be the herald of the Messiah, preparing the way of the Lord. To what is the Lord calling me?

Dear Friends in Christ,
December 12th is the day when we normally celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. However, this year this feast falls on the 3rd Sunday of Advent with readings and prayers for this Advent Sunday. Still, it is important for us to reflect on the role of Our Lady of Guadalupe in our own lives of faith. While teaching the catechumens and candidates this past Tuesday night, a question was raised about the Virgin Mary. The question: “Are Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Lourdes, and the other “Our Lady’s” all the same person or are they different persons?” They are the same person, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. But she has appeared over the past 2000 years under different guises to bring hope and healing to people who are hurting and to prepare the way for the coming of Her Son.
The Mother of God appeared four times to Juan Diego in 1531 on the hill called Tepeyac in what is today Mexico City. Juan Diego was one of the native Indians under the rule of the Spaniards who had just conquered Mexico. Our Lady appeared to Juan as one of his own people—dressed in the typical native dress and with the same brown skin—and also told him that she was his “Mother.” She was pregnant, bearing her Son to Juan Diego and the other native Indians. Our Lady told Juan to go to the local bishop, a Spaniard, and tell him to build a church on Tepeyac hill in her honor. The bishop did not believe Juan’s story until Juan’s last visit, when Juan opened his cloak (tilma) to drop roses from the Lady at the feet of the bishop. Upon the cloak of Juan Diego was imprinted the image of the Mother of God as Our Lady of Guadalupe. The bishop then built a church in her honor, and through the intercession of Our Lady, millions of native Indians were joined to her Son through baptism. Not only that, the bishop and the other Spaniards began to realize that the people they had conquered were also sons and daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church, and thus their sisters and brothers by faith. The Mother of God as Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to prepare the way for the coming of her Son today by bringing together the varied cultures that make up our parish and reminding us that she is Mother to us all, that her Son is our brother, and thus we are all members of the same family, the family of God.
The annual Catholic Charities appeal for our Archdiocese of OKC, which kicked off in September, has reached 92% of its goal ($1.565 million of the total $1.7 million). Our parish has had 232 donors commit to giving $84,313 toward this appeal. Last year we had 278 donors give $96,296. Thus, a good Christmas gift would be to make a commitment to support the good work of Catholic Charities. Pledge cards can be found on the main table in the gathering area. Thank you to those of you who have already pledged your support to this important work of the Church of serving our sisters and brothers who are in great need.
As I mentioned earlier this year in this column, since repairs were being made to the gathering area due to this year’s fire damage, the opportunity was taken to renovate this space by adding skylights and new lighting. This cost an additional $20,000 over and above what the insurance paid. A parish family has given $10,000 toward this cost. All that is needed is for another 10 families to give $1000 apiece or 20 families to step forward with $500. Another parish family has since stepped forward with a gift of $1000, so we are still $9000 away from reaching our goal. If interested in helping out, please see me or simply put your donation in the regular collection noting that it is for the renovation of the gathering space.
In the peace of Christ,
Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
October 2004 - October 2005
An Invitation to The Parish Family of St. Eugene

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Is the traditional and beautiful ceremony in which the whole congregation receives a solemn blessing with The Blessed Sacrament lifted in benediction by the Priest.
This is the year to experience it again - to teach your children about it - and to experience the fullness of love and worship there is in this holy rite.
Father Jacobi and The Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament invite you to come for Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on one or more of the Wednesdays of Advent:
December 15 & December 22,
6:00 p.m.
This is an earlier time than usual so that families can plan ahead to come together - on one or more of these early evenings and experience this holy blessing together.

"The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by not only celebrating it but also by praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to make contact with the very wellspring of grace."
Pope John Paul II
Ecclesia de Eucharistia

"SHARE IN THE CARE". Today is the collection for our retired religious. There are over 12,000 Catholic Sisters, Brothers and religious order Priests needing skilled care or help with daily living activities. Why do they need our help? Decades ago, young, wage earning members were able to meet the needs of their elder religious, and physicians and hospitals were able to donate much of their care. This is no longer the case due to the decline in vocations to the religious life and today's economy and healthcare environment. Our expression of care and concern is the Spirit of God at work in the church. The Spirit resting upon us prompts us to lighten the burden carried by religious institutes whose members have so generously served others. Please be generous.

We need your help! Problems have arisen with our vigil candles that present a fire hazard. Please DO NOT put matches in the candle holders when lighting a candle. Place them in the container below the candles. Use ONLY the candles provided by the church. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our candles available for everyone.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK at home or in the hospital, especially: Manuel Moran, Tom Fox, John Chyz, Amelia Torres, Pat Reynolds, Alan Giroux, Johnnie Cravotto, Bob Gilmore, Jan McLemore, Sally Curry, Betty Muller, Keith Anneler, Michael Chronister, Donna Bay, Edna Gunter, Ewart Vaughn, Judy Fairless, Robert Mabe, Beverly Reeve, Randy Conner, Betty Modeland, Cliff Poeling, Sally Collins, David Lawalin, Danny Goe, John Connors, Wes Finley, Sr. Jeanette Feldott, Hans Brisch, Steve McKenzie, Bobby Alsobrook, Sr. and Mary Agnes Coody.
