December 8, THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY - Masses:
6:30 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 5:30 p.m. and
7:30 p.m. in Spanish

Dear Friends in Christ,
This Wednesday, December 8th, is a holy day of obligation, celebrating the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patroness of the United States of America. My dad was born on the 8th of December, and he used to think when he was a little boy that his family was going to church to celebrate his birthday. In the minds of some Catholics, there is still a “child-like” misunderstanding of what we celebrate on December 8th. We are not celebrating the miraculous conception of the Son of God by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary (that feast is on March 25th, the Annunciation). Rather, on Wednesday we rejoice because in God’s loving plan of salvation he freed the Mother of his Son, from the power of original sin from the first moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, Anne. Thus, in God’s wisdom, Mary shared ahead of time in the power of her Son’s victory over sin, prefiguring how we, too, would be freed from sin by the power of his saving death and resurrection. Also, by her immaculate conception, Mary became a worthy temple, a fitting vessel for the eternal Son of God. Mass times are listed elsewhere in this bulletin.
This Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. will be our Communal Penance Rite. Priests from area parishes will come to assist me in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The power of this healing sacrament prepares the way for the coming of the Lord during the upcoming Christmas Season.
The 17th annual national appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be conducted December 11-12 under the theme “Share in the Care.” This collection is taken to help religious institutions meet the challenge of escalating costs of health care, therapies, and medicines for their frail elderly members. The cost of care for more than 12,000 religious women and men in need of skilled care or assisted living exceeds 400 million each year. Only a small percentage of the cost is covered by Social Security or pension plans. One way of saying thanks to the thousand of religious women and men who have given their lives in service at Catholic schools, hospitals, and other in other ministries is to support this appeal. Please use the special envelope in your envelope packet and place the envelope in with the regular collection.
Jared Maupin, 15-year old son of Dr. Bill Maupin and stepson of Bill’s wife, Judy, died suddenly on Sunday morning, Nov. 28th. Please pray for Jared’s eternal rest, and please keep the Maupin family in your prayers during this very difficult time.
In the peace of Christ,
Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

In December, we are reminded of God's gifts to us. God asks us to share our gifts with others during this blessed Christmas season. Catholic Charities needs your help. Please join in God's works by making an end-of-the-year contribution to the 2004 Annual Appeal. In our prayers and actions, we ask God's help in feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and lifting the weak. For information, call 523-3000. Thank you for your generosity and support.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK at home or in the hospital, especially: Manuel Moran, Tom Fox, John Chyz, Amelia Torres, Pat Reynolds, Alan Giroux, Johnnie Cravotto, Bob Gilmore, Jan McLemore, Sally Curry, Betty Muller, Keith Anneler, Michael Chronister, Donna Bay, Edna Gunter, Ewart Vaughn, Judy Fairless, Robert Mabe, Beverly Reeve, Randy Conner, Betty Modeland, Cliff Poeling, Sally Collins, David Lawalin, Danny Goe, John Connors, Wes Finley, Sr. Jeanette Feldott, Hans Brisch, Steve McKenzie and Bobby Alsobrook, Sr.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS. The second collection for Dec. 11/12 is for our retired religious. Today there are over 12,000 Catholic Sisters, Brothers and religious order Priests needing skilled care or help with daily living activities. Why do they need our help? Decades ago, young, wage earning members were able to meet the needs of their elder religious, and physicians and hospitals were able to donate much of their care. This is no longer the case due to the decline in vocations to the religious life and today's economy and healthcare environment. Our expression of care and concern is the Spirit of God at work in the church. The Spirit resting upon us prompts us to lighten the burden carried by religious institutes whose members have so generously served others. Please be generous next week when we collect for our retired religious.

A special private telephone number, 405-720-9878 has been installed through the direction of the Archbishop, as a pastoral response to anyone who, as a child or minor, was sexually abused by a priest. The telephone calls will be answered by a trained counselor.
The purpose of the telephone line is twofold. First, it will give a voice to any victim, enabling them to report the allegations of abuse. Therefore, it may be the first step of investigation. Second, the telephone line will provide access to pastoral counseling. This may be the initial step to bring healing and comfort to the victim. The line is answered weekdays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or at other hours by a confidential answering machine. Messages are retrieved and returned as soon as possible.

An Invitation to The Parish Family of St. Eugene

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Is the traditional and beautiful ceremony in which the whole congregation receives a solemn blessing with The Blessed Sacrament lifted in benediction by the Priest.

Father Jacobi and The Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament invite you to come for Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on one or more of the Wednesdays of Advent:
December 15 & December 22,

This earlier time than usual is so that families can plan ahead to come together - on one or more of these early evenings and experience this holy blessing together.

"The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by not only celebrating it but also by praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to make contact with the very wellspring of grace."
