PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK at home or in the hospital, especially: Manuel Moran, Tom Fox, John Steltenkamp, John Chyz, Amelia Torres, Pat Reynolds, Alan Giroux, Johnnie Cravotto, Bob Gilmore, Jan McLemore, Sally Curry, Betty Muller, Keith Anneler, Michael Chronister, Donna Bay, Edna Gunter, Ewart Vaughn, Judy Fairless, Robert Mabe, Beverly Reeve, Randy Conner, Betty Modeland, Cliff Poeling, Sally Collins, David Lawalin, Danny Goe, Sheila Cameron, John Connors, Wes Finley, Sr. Jeanette Feldott, Hans Brisch and Steve McKenzie.
Dear Friends in Christ,
Sr. Carmen Vasquez celebrates her golden anniversary of vowed religious life on December 8th. Sr. Carmen is in her 3rd year at our parish, where the majority of her ministry is with our Spanish-speaking parishioners. She is a Carmelite Sister and lives with other Carmelite Sisters at their convent at Holy Angels parish in downtown Oklahoma City. Our parish will honor Sr. Carmen for her 50 years of vowed religious life with receptions after the 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Masses on Sunday, December 5th. Earlier this year we celebrated with Fr. Ross his golden anniversary of ordination. Fr. Ross and Sr. Carmen together have given the Church 100 years of faithful service. What a great gift!
A Communal Penance Rite for our parish has been scheduled for Thursday, December 9th, at 7 p.m. Quite a few other priests will assist Fr. Ross and me in celebrating the Sacrament of Penance. Following are the times for Penance Rites at area parishes during December:
6:30 p.m. Wed., Dec. 1st @ St. Monica in Edmond
5:00 p.m. Sun., Dec. 12th @ Christ the King
7:00 p.m. Mon., Dec. 13th @ St. John the Baptist in Edmond
7:00 p.m. Wed., Dec. 15th @ St. Charles Borromeo
7:00 p.m. Mon., Dec. 20th @ Epiphany of the Lord
Also, Confessions are heard on Wednesdays from 12-1 p.m., on Saturdays from 3-4 p.m. or by appointment.
During Advent, Christians become more aware of those around them who are impoverished and thus help those in great need with deeds of charity. These compassionate works during December are important, but more profound changes of heart and systemic changes are needed to help those being crushed by poverty. Earlier this year, the nonpartisan Working Poor Families Project released a study showing that 1 in every 5 U.S. jobs pays less than the poverty-level wage for a family of four. The report, based on Census Bureau data from 2002, stated that nearly 39 million Americans, including 20 million children, are members of “low-income working families.” The result of so many low-paying jobs is that these families have barely enough money to cover basic needs like housing, groceries, and childcare.
Barbara Ehrenreich went undercover in the Year 2000, working a series of low paying jobs, and writes about her experience in her book, “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America.” Her book exposes the desperate plight of Americans working for minimum wage. The assumption of the welfare reform of the 1990’s was that a job was the ticket out or poverty. However, two adults working full-time at minimum wage barely clear the poverty line in Oklahoma County, which is $18,800 for a family of two adults and two children. There is a difference between a minimum wage and a living wage. Thus, our U.S. Bishops have been calling for a federally mandated increase in the minimum wage, which has remained at the same level for quite a few years.
In the peace of Christ,
Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
October 2004 - October 2005
An Invitation to The Parish Family of St. Eugene
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Is the traditional and beautiful ceremony in which the whole congregation receives a solemn blessing with The Blessed Sacrament lifted in benediction by the Priest.
This is the year to experience it again - to teach your children about it - and to experience the fullness of love and worship there is in this holy rite.
Father Jacobi and The Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament invite you to come for Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on one or more of the Wednesdays of Advent:
December 1, December 15 & December 22,
6:00 p.m.
This earlier time than usual is so that families can plan ahead to come together - on one or more of these early evenings and experience this holy blessing together.
"The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by not only celebrating it but also by praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to make contact with the very wellspring of grace."
Pope John Paul II
