THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25,
9:00 A.M.

Dear Friends in Christ,
Next Sunday is the beginning of another Season of Advent and the start of a new liturgical year. (The Gospel of Matthew will be our guide during this new liturgical year.) Advent is not a penitential season, like Lent, but rather a time of devout and joyful expectation as we prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us is remembered and also direct our mind and heart to await Christ’s 2nd Coming in glory. We find ourselves in-between these two comings of Christ. As we reflect upon the humble birth of the King of Kings and upon his return at the end of time as King of the Universe, we are called to look closely at our lives and see where Christ is breaking into our lives now, here, at this time. How is Christ coming to us by the power of his Spirit, challenging us to grow in our faith and hope and love? In what ways are we being called to bring Christ to birth by faith, to bring him to others?
As we in the United States prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving and look forward to feasting with family and friends, we need to pray in a special way for those people throughout the world who are starving and who are separated from their families due to violent conflicts raging across their countries. Thousands upon thousands of people in the Darfur region of Sudan in Africa are dying because of lack of food and because of the violent conflict tearing apart that country. Also, pray for soldiers who are far from home this Thanksgiving and for their families who miss them.
With all the rainy weather these past couple of weeks, umbrellas are being put to good use. If you have extra umbrellas, especially if they are large ones (like golfing umbrellas), please consider donating these umbrellas to the church. Our greeters could then use these umbrellas to keep people dry when they are dropped off at the front entrance of the church on a rainy day before Mass. You can bring your umbrella by the parish office during the week or drop it off in the priests’ sacristy near the entryway to the church on weekends.
Our local Knights of Columbus Council agreed this year to pick up trash on Hefner Road between Penn and May. Thanks to the Knights for taking on this service to our community. Also, our Knights are selling Christmas cards after Mass as one of their fundraisers for the good causes they support, such as sponsoring one of the seminarians studying for our Archdiocese. This year our Knights are supporting Deacon Joe Irwin with a monthly stipend and with their prayers. Deacon Irwin is from St. Joseph Parish in Norman and will be ordained a priest next year.
You will notice on the weekly Mass schedule that Mass will be celebrated on Thanksgiving Day at 9 a.m., but there will be no Mass on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Arthur and Sylvia Valdez will renew their wedding vows at Mass next Saturday in celebration of their 25th anniversary.
Fr. Bill Ross is having arthroscopic surgery on one of his knees this coming Tuesday afternoon. Please keep him in your prayers. Also, this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. is another fine concert in the Virginia Campbell concert series in our church. Bring your Sunday bulletin to obtain a discount on the entry fee.
In the peace of Christ,
Rev. Joseph A. Jacobi

Poverty in America is on the rise. Nearly 35 million Americans live below the poverty line. But we can reverse the trend by rekindling the spirit of community with those in need, by joining in solidarity to break the cycle of poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) supports self-help projects of poor and low-income people working together to improve their lives and their communities. Please give generously to CCHD in today's collection.

CRISTO REY
