When I was young, the family prayer books all contained foot-notes after most prayers indicating that there was an indulgence of three hundred days or whatever was stipulated. Please explain: what is an indulgence in the terms it was used in the prayer books?

Frank

Dear Frank,

When we sin, we deserve punishment. Even sins that seem small to us have consequences. We can be sorry and God will forgive our sin, but we still deserve to pay for what we have done. This is called the temporal punishment of sin. Temporal punishment applies to mortal sins and venial sins. Sometimes our repentance is so sincere, of course, that no punishment remains.

An indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment. We can lessen or ease our temporal punishment by penance. Penance gains us access to the treasury of the Church to take away the temporal punishment of sin. The Church's treasury is the merits of Jesus and the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. Clearly, this treasury is of infinitive value.

When the Church grants an indulgence, it uses the treasury without the need for grave or severe penance. The footnotes you saw indicate that the prayer is equivalent to a certain number of days of penance.

Prayers and good works often have indulgences attached to them. We gain these indulgences for ourselves or the souls in purgatory by fulfilling the conditions of the indulgence.

Father Joseph Nolen, C.Ss.R.

We are called to be good stewards of our personal vocations. St. Paul's prayer for the Thessalonians is therefore ours, too - "that our God may make (us) worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith."
