Dear Friends in Christ,

Mirtala Aaron began work in our parish office as a part-time secretary the first week of October. Mirtala works from 1-5 p.m. from Tuesday-Friday. Mirtala and her husband, Mike, have been members of our parish for 34 years. After working as a schoolteacher for 27 years in the OKC school system teaching at all different grade levels, Mirtala retired this past May. She is fluent in both English and Spanish and teaches a beginning and advanced "English as a Second Language (ESL)" class at our parish. Mirtala was elected to serve as secretary for the recently formed Hispanic women’s group, "Las Mujeres en Accion con Cristo" (Women in Action with Christ). Feel free to stop by the parish office and welcome Mirtala as our new part-time secretary and know that the parish office will be open one hour later on Tuesdays-Fridays, closing at 5 p.m.

This past June, on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Pope John Paul II announced that October 2004 – October 2005 would be the "Year of the Eucharist." The theme of this Eucharistic Year is: "The Eucharist, source and summit of the life and mission of the Church." By focusing our attention during the coming year on the Eucharist, the Pope invites the faithful "to start afresh from Christ." The Pope also stated the following. "The Eucharist is the center of the Church’s life. In it Christ offers Himself to the Father for our sake, making us sharers in His own sacrifice, and gives Himself to us as the bread of life for our journey on the highways of the world." In 2003 Pope John Paul II released an encyclical on the Eucharist entitled "Ecclesia de Eucharistia," which laid the groundwork for this yearlong celebration. There will be special Eucharistic events in our parish and Archdiocese in the coming 12 months to draw us deeper into the mighty mystery of the Eucharist.

Speaking of the Pope, this past Wednesday, Oct. 13th, he celebrated the 26th anniversary of his election to the papacy. I hope to see him very soon, for by the time you read this column, I will be well on my way to Rome, or already arrived. Fr. Rex Arnold and I are leading a pilgrimage to the holy sites in Italy, flying to Rome on Saturday, October 16th, and returning to OKC late Friday evening, October 29th.

The U.S. Bishops have decided to have another audit conducted to ensure that all dioceses are putting into place the Charter for the Protection of Young People. Last year our Archdiocese of OKC passed this audit with high marks. This year’s audit will be conducted this coming week, and the diocese has recommended our parish as one of the parishes to be audited. Thanks to the good work by Deirdre Hite in implementing our "Safe Environment" program, and the supervision of all those involved with our youth (Principal Suzette Williams, Youth Director LeAnn Hufnagel, and DRE Karen Bernardy) I am confident that our parish will come through this audit with flying colors. We do everything we can to protect young people here, and even more, to help them grow in love of God and neighbor.

In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Jacobi

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL - We recently helped a family that needed assistance with their water and also their electric bill. The mother quit her job to take care of her 28 year old son who had been disabled in an automobile accident and the husband also lost his job. They are both working again in jobs that allow someone to be with the young man at all times, but during the period they were unemployed, the bills became overdue. We paid their water bill to avoid cut-off and gave them food and referrals for help with the electric.
