** In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not to give in hopes of repayment, but to give open-handedly to the poor and needy. That sort of giving mirrors the bountiful giving of God, and Jesus assures us it is blessed indeed! **

Dear Padre,

I have some questions about confession. Is it still an obligation to go to confession once a year? Is a general confession when you go to an individual priest after a prayer service?

Tom

Dear Tom,

There is an obligation to confess grave sins at least once a year. If there are no grave sins, then there is no obligation, strictly speaking. It is a common practice to approach the sacrament of reconciliation during Lent. Catholics should develop a habit of receiving the sacrament either weekly, monthly, or yearly. That is a worthy practice. By the way, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Code of Canon Law refer to reconciliation as the "sacrament of penance".

Reconciliation is meant to be widely available to Catholics. In fact, canon law requires pastors to establish days and times for individual confession. Most parishes still have specific times for confession. In addition, people may make an appointment to celebrate reconciliation. To help make the sacrament more available, parishes often cooperate with one another to bring several priests together to celebrate reconciliation. In this case, parishes offer a penance service with Scripture readings, a brief homily, and examination of conscience followed by individual confession of sins during Advent and Lent. This is not a general confession but is actually a penance service with individual confession of sins.

A general confession is something different. It is a review of the penitent's whole life in the context of the sacrament of penance. It is optional and rarely done. If you have further questions, please consult you parish priest or confessor.

In Psalm 68:4-11, God speaks to our need to be sensitive to the needs of the poor. "God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling." In the past year in your community, the poor, the homeless, the lonely, and the sick, have been helped by Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. As we plan for the Catholic Charities 2004 Annual Appeal to begin in mid-September, let us pray for our own understanding, compassion, generosity, and respect for human life.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

A box for donations to serve the poor through St. Vincent de Paul is located in the rear of the church, above the gift table. If you do not use the regular St. Vincent de Paul envelope, please place your donations in the designated box.
