Dear Friends in Christ,
Raul Grajeda and Elbin Lopez work full-time at our church and school doing janitorial work. As I shared with you in this column a few weeks ago, Raul was hurt while trimming a tree for one of his neighbors (broken wrist and injured neck). Raul’s doctor has not yet released him to do any manual labor, but Raul has been here daily giving supervision to Hermitario Lopez, who has been filling in for Raul. During the first couple weeks of August, Elbin has been away on a long-scheduled vacation. Mr. Lopez has been working hard but lately there has been a lot to do. I give you this background because there were some cleaning needs in the school (baseboards, windows, shutters on windows, one stairwell, etc.) that were not able to be completed by Thursday, August 12th, the day before "Meet Your Teacher Day." But the school was sparkling clean by Friday, August 13th, because some of the members of the new Hispanic Women’s Group (Las Mujeres en Accion con Cristo--- Women in Action with Christ) and 15 members of the Hispanic Youth Group spent several hours on Thursday night the 12th of August cleaning the school. This is what being a community of faith is all about—people stepping forward to help out and doing so joyfully. Thanks to those who pitched in to help!
Mike Muckleroy and Jack Holland have also put in many hours of volunteer work this summer, doing repair work in the school and church facilities and many other odds and ends. Thanks to Mike and Jack for their generous service, especially when we have been shorthanded.
The newly formed women’s group "Las Mujeres en Accion con Cristo" also prepared the dozens upon dozens of tamales for the Tamale Sale after Masses on July 25th and raised around $500 to help pay for some of the expenses of the Festival of the Americas: International. Mark your calendar now for this parish festival---Sunday afternoon, September 12th.
The fire marshall has informed our parish that we can no longer put chairs along the wall at the back of our church, nor in our gathering area, because these block the aisles and a major exit in case of fire. Also, the two back pews in the central part of church will be reserved for parents who have infants, becausef the cry room is still not usable because of the July 28th fire.
Beginning this Sunday morning after 10 a.m. Mass is a special Adult Education Class on the 7 themes of Catholic Social teaching. During the past several months in the Gospel Truth these themes have been highlighted. Those who attend this series of 4 classes will better understand the principles underlying the booklet "Faithful Citizenship."
Fr. Lawrence Stasyszen, President of St. Gregory’s University, will preach at all the Masses on the weekend of August 28-29. During those Masses a special collection will be taken up for the Scholarship Fund at St. Gregory’s to assist Catholic students with their tuition.
I will be on vacation from Sunday afternoon, August 22nd until Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 1st. Fr. Ross will be here in my absence.
In the peace of Christ,
Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi
