Dear Friends in Christ,
The first day of school for our parish school is this Wednesday, August 18th. There has been a flurry of last minute cleaning and maintenance work in preparation for this school year. The carpet and the tile in school have been professionally cleaned, and most of this expense is being covered by an extra week of rent from the Educational Testing System (ETS) to use our school building. Two new speed bumps have been installed in the drive that goes by the east side of the church and then curves around the south side of the church before entering the parking lot in front of the school. Because of the presence of schoolchildren during the school day and parishioners on the weekends near this driveway, these new speed bumps are intended as a safety precaution. A couple of major potholes have been repaired in this driveway on the east side of the church, and the entire drive has been replaced on the south side of the church. The speed bumps and new asphalt are costing a little over $11,000 and will be paid from the School Trust Fund, which was established for major maintenance and repairs. Also, two electronic gates will be installed at the two entrances to the parking lot that is located in front of the school (east side of school building). During the school day, the gate at the entrance off of Greystone (formerly Utica Drive) will be closed to limit traffic and then opened in time for parents to pick up their children. The gate at the entrance south of the church will be opened during the school day, and then closed while parents are picking up their children, as a way to restrict traffic flow. These gates replace chains that had been used in past years but which were not very visible, and thus on several occasions cars drove right through them. These electronic gates will also come in handy for our annual parish festival and other occasions when we need to restrict access to this back parking lot in front of the school. These gates cost $4500 and will be paid by the School PTO from funds raised at the Spring Golf Tournament.
Part of the remodeling that has been ongoing over the past several months has been in the hallway that joins the school building to the parish buildings (the hallway between the gymnasium and the school where the soft drink and candy machines were located). The Art Committee in the school has painted this whole area and will be hanging art by our students on these walls as part of an ongoing gallery. The soft drink and candy machines have been removed.
Sr. Carmen Vasquez returned from her summer retreats and meetings refreshed and ready to work again in our Hispanic Ministry Office. Sr. Adela Lopez, who had worked here the past two years, did not return, but we are hoping that our parish will receive another Sister to help Sr. Carmen. The Director of the Office for Hispanic Ministries for the Archdiocese, Sr. Elsa Galdeano, recently resigned after many years of service.
As you may have noticed in an insert in last week’s bulletin, the Choir Concert on Marian music has been rescheduled for October 10th. It was originally scheduled for this afternoon.
In the peace of Christ, Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi

THOSE WHO ARE SICK

When I sold the Rodgers organ to St. Eugene's in 1980, I never dreamed I would return as parish organist in 1994. Ironically, I had never played a Catholic Mass. With Michael's (& Father Pruett's) patience - and 5 masses per week, I soon learned.
The miracles I have experienced here are far too numerous to list. The Dawson Steinway Piano, the new school building, the new parking lot, and a new sound system stand out as some of my most memorable.
When I faced Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1999, I experienced the miracle that would change my life. Your compassion and generosity during that period were the very reasons I found myself wanting to be "official". Easter Sunday, 2000, while in the Hospital, I was confirmed into the Church. I have always believed your prayers were the augmentation to the doctors in making me well. My CT-SCANS continue to be clean and I want to thank you for your continued prayers and kind sentiments, especially from the choir, expressed in recent weeks. Thanks for ten great years!
I love you, Leon.
