Dear Friends in Christ,

Around 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening, July 28th, firemen arrived to find that a fire had been smoldering above the ceiling of the cry room, women’s restroom, parish nurse’s office, and part of the gathering area. As I write this letter on Wed., August 4th, the source of this fire has yet to be determined, thus the removal of more of the ceiling in the northeast hallway near the chapel and the removal of some of the copper covering in the gathering area. As of this writing, there is still no electricity for the cry room, women’s bathroom, parish nurse’s office, or the parish counselor’s office. During this period of repair, Polly Keenan, our parish nurse, will have a temporary office in the Hispanic Ministry Office, next to the former youth room (now restored nursery) and south of the Education offices. We are looking for a space for Deirdre Hite, our parish counselor and communications director, to use. I apologize for the inconvenience that this fire has caused and ask for your patience, especially the patience of women who will have to make use of the restroom across from the Hispanic Ministry office and of parents of small children who regularly use the cry room

Our nursery has been restored to its former location, next to the Hispanic Ministry Office. (A flyer in this week’s bulletin shows the locations of all offices and rooms in our parish plant—the nursery is just east of the kitchen and gym.) Beginning this weekend, this nursery space is available for use. The Pre-Kindergarten classroom will no longer be used as a nursery. The restored nursery has its own bathroom and a covered, enclosed outdoor patio. The office of the Extended Care Director, who is also the nursery director for the parish, is located in the nursery.

Mrs. Lori Kelley is the new Director of Extended Care and the nursery. Lori began work on August 2nd and is working closely with Lynn Elliott, the former nursery director and Director of Extended Care, who is stepping down from this position. Lori and her husband, Tim, have been members of St. Eugene for 11 years and have three children. Thanks to Lynn for her 6 years of dedicated service to our children and their parents.

One of the special envelopes in your envelope packet for next weekend is for the National Collection for the support of the Catholic University of America (CUA), located in Washington, D.C., my alma mater. Students from all 50 states and almost 100 countries are enrolled at CUA. More than 1900 high school seniors who were admitted to CUA for fall 2004 were offered a guaranteed and annually renewable $3000 Parish Scholarship. This national collection helps to fund these scholarships.

Next Saturday evening, August 14th, LeAnn Bomhoff and Rick Hufnagel will celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony at the 5 p.m. Mass. LeAnn has served as Coordinator of Youth Ministry for the past 1½ years. Please make the Bomhoff and Hufnagel families feel welcome at this Saturday evening Mass and pray for LeAnn and Rick as they enter into this holy bond.

Please keep the Williams family in your prayers. Kyle Williams, 12 year old son of Will and Sue Williams, brother to Kevin and to Kaylyn, died Sunday, August 1st, after a personal watercraft accident on Lake Eufala. May he rest in peace.

In the peace of Christ, Fr. Joseph A. Jacobi

Dear friends of St. Eugene Parish,

Thank you so much for your hospitality last weekend. It was a joy to speak with you and I hope that a continuing relationship will continue to build! FOCUS is doing amazing things and it is only possible by your generosity!

With your help we can reach more students every year for Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. What started out with one missionary on one college campus has blossomed to nearly ninety missionaries on 24 campuses in just over six years!

FOCUS is dedicated to showing college students Christian principles that they can apply to their walks of life. Through this, not only are those students brought closer to the faith, but also all those who participate with them, namely you and I. Just as we teach others about Christ, they teach us through their growth and love.

Once again, thank you for your generosity over the weekend. You will all be in my prayers and if there is anything I can do for you or any questions I can answer, please feel free to contact me. Please pray for us.

Sincerely in Christ,

Joshua A. Gideon
