DEAR PADRE,

How should parents handle a crying baby at Mass?

The older I get, the more distracted I become when crying babies are present at Mass. On some occasions, I leave Mass so irritated that I wonder what benefit I gained in being there at all. Please advise.

Evelyn

Dear Evelyn,

At the movies, the opera, or some other formal live theatrical event, a crying infant is regarded as a persona non-grata. But the Eucharist is a family event, not a theatrical one. Children should feel welcomed at Mass. After all, it was Jesus who said "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs" (Mark 10:14).

While small children may belong at Mass, it should also be acknowledged that certain courtesies apply when crowds gather to pray. Parents may consider sitting at the edge of a pew for a quick exit to minimize disruption when a child needs immediate attention. When a child is of a certain age, parents may consider using parish nurseries or designated cry rooms in churches on a temporary basis, if available. By the same token, impatient parishioners (and preachers) may want to be sensitive to the needs of parents, who also desire participation in the family celebration and weekly nourishment by Christ's Word and sacrament - temporary toddler temper tantrums notwithstanding.

Father Byron Miller, C.Ss.R.

Jesus is describing God's immeasurable generosity

when He says in today's Gospel,

"Whoever asks, receives;

whoever seeks, finds;

whoever knocks, is admitted."

But it should also be the description of us

as Christian stewards -

those seeking to follow Christ

by using our gifts in service to others.

TO ALL OUR CATHOLIC CHURCHES....

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

We received a letter from Sister Sponsa Beltran, Archbishop Beltran's Sister in Liberia, Africa

A fire broke out at the Rehab Center. The entire dormitory and the adjoining storage area burned down due to an electrical fire. Thanks be to God every child and Sister were saved.

They have lost everything that was housed within the buildings including all clothing, beds, linens, food, available cash, wheelchairs, braces and tabernacle which Sister stored in her room so that the children could have perpetual adoration while repairs were made to the chapel, along with anything else you can think of. They have shared with so many thousands that we cannot believe that God will abandon them now. They are currently residing on the floor in the chapel and school building and will live out of these until we can get emergency aid to them. Please pray for them and us that we are able to find help for them and quickly. Right now money for food and daily necessities is most imperative.

All fire donations should be made out to Sr. Sponsa Beltran OSF and mailed to me as soon as possible.

As devastating as this situation is at this present time, to everyone who has followed Sister and the children's story, we can never forget for a moment that they all survived thanks to the Power of Prayer. Let us all give thanks this weekend that they are still with us when conditions tell us that most should never have lived for the damage was total. As soon as donations come in, they will be wired immediately to Sister Sponsa to meet emergency needs. NO DONATION IS TOO LITTLE!!! Please mail donations to Pearl Sullens, 1941 N.W. 17th, Oklahoma City, OK 73106 or call 524-3641, if you have any questions.

Join Father Jacobi, October 16-29, 2004, for a pilgrimages/image to the Spiritual Treasures of Italy. Begin your pilgrimage in Rome with Mass at the Basilica of St. Eugene. Pray in the awesome St. Peter's and the stark and moving catacombs of Rome. Stroll the medieval streets of Assisi, visit the resting place of St. Anthony in Padua, enjoy the peaceful beauty of St. Mark's in Venice. Other pilgrimages/image destinations include Verna and Florence. Cost $3,495. Call Judi, 751-7115, ext. 115, for more information.

A very special "thank you" for your prayers and for the generosity of those who made it possible for the youth to attend the Catholic HEART Workcamp in New Orleans.
